Carsten: Wunderbar! You are exactly right. In fact the methods you describe are the only way I can ever build a personal sub. You have really got me thinking now. I even dug out my copy of UNDERWATER WARRIORS, Paul Kemp,USNI Press 1996, ISBN#1-55750857-7 and started reading it again. I know you have a copy but those not familiar with the book should get hold of one. Anybody interested in the design of small subs will find it invaluable.
