Carl, I don't know much about diving, but I do know about the USNavy. I don't fully understand the theory behind it, but what Carsten has described (and shown) with the plastic bag is very very similar to the Steinke hoods the USN uses to escape from downed subs (effectively a homemade version), as someone mentioned earlier. I know this doesn't explain why it works, but I know it has been proven to do so.
