Yes, the brushes may be replaced with other materials.
Many permanent magnet motors use copper brushes. They
are much more expensive and wear the commutator more,
but do work. Copper brushes of various sizes are 
available at any decent auto-parts store. Copper
brushes
will fill your fluid with copper dust eventually, just
like carbon. What about a simple windage tray that the
rotation of the armature causes the oil to circulate 
through, that in turn "scrapes" the heavy particles
out. You could then clean the scraper periodically.
