Thanks Warren :)

scale model is not a safe way to collect data, unless
it is backed up by further analysis. FEA gives you
more control, and will save you money. Are you
comfortable with any 3D CAD package? We are
investigating FEA for the OSS project and a post was
made recently with links to FEA software.

Yes, it goes without saying, CAD first and then some FEA. I wanted a model anyway, just to see that everything lines up properly and gets included (handrails, ladders) and things I may miss if its just a drawing, however detailed. I always expect some 6yr old smart-ass to look at a model and point out something like "where's the engine?" hahaha :) I was just wondering if it would pay to make it a working model or just a mock-up. the mock-up wins thankfully :))

Ive checked some of the sites in various posts for FEA software,
but this will come some time later. I'm still grappling with AUTOCAD and solid modeling :( I'm using a spreadsheet for the rough calculations, but at the moment I dont know enough to put any real figures in. Ive got to get a few books on the formulae involved and work them out myself (from the PSUBS list - busbys and the Naval engineering one?).

I tried a hull calculations spreadsheet (from PSUBS i think), and it imploded on me (the software, not the sub). it came out with some weird numbers, so i'll need to work it out for my various design concepts for myself.

Thanks for the comments however. I expect to post more frequently when I know a little more :)

cheers
