Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] gauge questions

On his K boats, Captain Kittredge used the transponders mounted on the nose of one of his side thrusters.  If he was traveling down with the thruster, the transponder pointed downward. When the thruster was leveled off for forward travel, the transponder is pointing forward.  I was up to visit him not to long ago and saw he also mounted a transponder on a short pipe that protruded through the conning tower hatch cover. Inside he had a handle that allowed him to rotate it and scan all around the sub left and right.  He incased his transponders in what appeared to be silicone but may have been some other rubber type compound.  I don't remember if it incased the working surface of the transponder also.

I will probably use a similar system but haven't picked out a fish finder yet.  Any suggestions on what manufacture and model is best suited for our sub needs?

Would it  be a good idea to be able to rotate the transponder. Horizontaly directed a fishfinder might be a nice obstacle detector. When you direct it upward may be it enables you to find your supportvessel in muddy waters.

It's not a crazy idea...   I've used an off the shelf fish finder/depth gauge.. The transponder took many trips to 300 feet with out any problems.  I dident realize that the digital world had evolved to equal the reliability of the analog world.  But now that I think about it, we rely on it from the time we take off in an air plane till the time we land.  We spend billions on resurch and development for air craft ( fly by wire ) and there's no reason we shouldint take advantage of it in our subs....Thank you, Warnn for bring it to my attention.
