[PSUBS-MAILIST] Verne Trivia

I've been fine-tuning a Visual Basic program to calculate the size of
Verne's Nautilus. Nemo claims that it has conical ends, weighs
1500 tons submerged and is 232 feet long, in most translations.

Miller's translation says the length is 228.9 feet and the weight
is 1500 metric tons, which translates to 1653.46 English tons.
The beam is 26.16 feet.

>From that, it seems that the conical ends are 90 feet long.
The central section is 49 feet long. To do this, however,
the beam has to be 26 feet even. But my program tells
me the displacement submerged is exactly 1653.46 tons.

It seems that Verne did not consider the displacement
of the two conning towers. They were retractable, so
perhaps he did not.
