I wonder about the sodium peroxide Mine Safety Apparatus
breathing units the Navy and maritime industry used until
replaced by the scuba variety.  For that matter the oxygen
emitting candles used by the Solidox welding torches back in the
70s.
I suppose that O2 would be costly.

That U-boat book did mention that the Germans looked into
liquid oxygen for a smaller U-boat.
The warnings about oxygen are appropriate though, I have read that
'the japanese found that if the tubing delivering high pressure O@
had too tight bends there were explosions.
