Graham, 

I think most of us in one form or another have got seriously questioned
here, and I don't mind saying my ego has got some pretty good bruises. But
after a while you'll realize there's no aggression behind the questions. In
fact some of the ones I've received were damned good ones that led me to
design changes. That's the whole point, and the only point. 

For all we know, someone posting might have a PhD in mechanical engineering.
Or perhaps a lifetime of experience worth just as much. Or maybe they're a
teenager who hasn't built up any credentials whatsoever. We simply don't
know, and don't mind.

I think the reaction you got was simply due to a combination of things:

1) The depth ratings you mentioned were pretty unusual. Not impossible, but
typically found in multi-million dollar subs. 
2) If there was ever a field where you have to think before you act, this is
it. People might design and calculate for years before actually cutting any
metal.

So nobody is asking for proprietary stuff. Its just that its a culture of
sharing information, and we're all better off for it.

It sounds like good advice you were given.   We have no idea the amount of
research and calculations you put into your hull design, but it sure doesn't
sound like your ready to order the hard goods yet.  So far you posted
several
depths, a hull diameter and thickness.  A hull is more than a big piece of
pipe.  Are you installing frames in it?
6404 feet is mighty deep!

No one here is trying to discourage you from the project, but please "don't
jump
in before you learn to swim."
