I know a Balao came to Richmond VA in about 1957 -- I was there.
I recall clearly that the water was just barely deep enough,
and the boat went aground twice.
I guess all that needs to be kept in mind is that rivers
must be deep enough. Well, that and the traffic. The
James River here is about 25 feet in some places, and a lot
more in others, but there's a lot of traffic. Some of
the traffic is ocean-going cargo ships, and they take all
the available water. Most of the traffic is high-speed
fishing boats and larger cruisers, and those folk never
keep a lookout.
