	Sometimes 'great flood' is a prehistoric euphamism for a
coincidence with a high-stand of eustatic sea level. There have been
several of those that, depending on local geography and bad weather, could
be quite impressive to behold.
	I also recall a geochemical argument for the Black Sea case
mentioned as well, as well as a geomorphological one. This also
corresponds with a rapid rise in eustatic sea level 8000 years ago if
memory serves. So much for gradualism! Another interesting example of a
global change producing interesting ripple effects can be found as early
as the 1st century BCE, and is recorded in the both morphological and
historical data from the area around the Dead Sea. It is very interesting
to see nature shaping myth and vice versa in holocene geoscience.
