I tried a 4-foot snorkel.  It worked fairly well for shallow depths.
It was really pretty good because instead of having the rigid
tube beside my mask, the flexible tubing was trailing behind me.

No one likes safety nazis, but they are their own worst enemies;
I don't worry about them.
