[PSUBS-MAILIST] Old sub built in Chicago
In Popular Mechanics, December 1960, there's a tiny photo and
a caption about a homebuilt. Page 89, top left.
"Powered on the surface by a five-horsepower engine and
underwater by a two-horsepower electric motor, a homemade
13-foot submarine prowls Lake Michigan. Isadore Portnoff
and Jerry Krason of Chicago made the hull from a used
500-gallon water tank. The craft weighs 3000 pounds."
The photo is from one end and above, and shows the
sub lifted partly out of the water. One end is a
cone, and the conning tower is a cylinder. There
are no visible ports. A tube extends up from the
hatch on the conning tower. There are four
rectangular planes, paired fore and aft.
Does anyone know about this one?
