Jacob, I'm gonna be pedantic here.  Fair warning! 

"Frightening, frightful, terrifying" are aspects of the "scarer" - in this
case, a Kittredge psub.  They are "scary" to some person.

"Fearful, apprehensive" apply to the "scaree" - in this case, a USSubs
salesman.  He was "scared by" the K-series psubs.

Now, why does "frightful" mean one thing, while "fearful" means the other? 
Because this is English, and English doesn't need a reason.
