I think the Kittredge boats are about as close to kit as
we're likely to see.

I used to think about that a lot. The deceptive part is
that all those other things "look" like they might make
good subs. Some of what we think about subs comes from
sci-fi (James Bond had a driveable sub-car), so we
gravitate toward that.
I'd really like to see what ideas you develop. You
might be able to hit something that works very well.
I suspect that any such modifications/ adaptations
would work better as wet subs given the inability
to work with the high-strength materials and high-power
engines. But I've been wrong before.
I must admit I keep looking at a couple of sailplanes
with an eye to converting them to wet subs. Never
quite gone as far as getting the plans ...
