RE: [PSUBS-MAILIST] pressure hull depth calculator

There is a failure mode in which the stiffeners themselves are the part that fails. That failure mode would not be taken into account by this workaround. So I'd say the workaround is good only so long as you have really over-dimensioned your stiffeners (and "really" is a relative term, hehe).

Still, that is a perfectly valid approach for zeroing in on a likely good design. One would still want to run the full calculations (i.e., including stiffeners) on that design before building, but this would help you get there.

My above ramblings are only for thin-walled cylinders, like a pressure hull. If you were making something like a camera housing or an UW light, the program is all you'd need.

Glad you like it. The way to get around the lack of stiffener support is to subtitute the length between stiffeners in place of the overall tube length. The software came from Deepsea.com. Does anyone have the Windows version?

This is EXCELLENT, I just ran it right away with no problems at all. Its great for calculating unstiffened cylinders, endcaps, and spheres. The big limitation is that in practice you will always want stiffeners in a cylinder unless its very short.

Thanks again, this little program is a beauty. Ray, you might want to read its disclaimers to see whether we can put it up on the site.

This may be old news to some of you, but I found a great DOS program which models pressure hull stresses. Its a very simple way of determining design parameters for a given depth or visa versa.

this is the program:
ftp://ftp.adnc.com/u7/deepseap/up_v301/updos301.exe

this is a manual for a latter version, but it has lots of information which i found very useful:
