Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Underwater Anchor System

Hi Lucas, hi Ed

the reason for the anchor mast idear is some expirence
with underwater anchoring in the heavy currents of the
North sea with "Seehund" Midgets submarines during WWII.

First time they "anchor" (resting on the bottom) with negative
buoyancy - and during the time the currents change the direction
they turned from starborad to port or reverse - they capzied more or
less.

Later they development that it is much easier to "anchor" with
only the bow a little to heavy - just a small contact between
the bow and the bottom. This was much more comfortable but
unfortunatly during heavy currents time - the midget
move away from the resting place stern first..

I will have two anchor system on board. One normal anchor in the sail
with a
short chain and a long rope - goes overboard only on surface in
emergency
(engine out of order )case - or in a nice sand beach. Just by hand.
And for resting underwater the anchor hydraulic mast and a little
negative bouancy in the bow hard tank.

The problem with a normal anchor underwater is the long circle
the boat turn around during moving currents. Not very secure in
the victim of a wreck or bigger rocks. And you need in emergency
(anchor catch something) case to loose the chain or rope.

If you propeller runs into the rope - you need a diver
lookout chamber ..

The problem with the anchor mast are more technical - the
shaft must be cleaned by - for example - a plastic ring before get
into the cylinder. Also the shaft need additional support on the
end of the cylinder because the cylinder seals doesn't like
moments from the side.

see you - Carsten
