Some years ago my employer arranged a "how to talk to the media course" which included a brief
visit by a nationally known reporter (who may prefer that no names are mentioned).

Anyhow, the first piece of advice was, IF you trust the reporter you're talking to, the first
thing to do is negotiate your attribution.  Are you (in this case) "Local marine hobbyist John
Farrington" or "Local businessman John Farrington" or "Local crackpot John 'The Underwater
Screwball' Farrington" or what?  If you don't discuss it, you take your chances.
