Ed, you might still be able to use the pulse or stepping motor but the 
control circuitry would be more complex. I designed my own PWM motor 
controller (20kHz operation at about 1.2 kW) which is on the website, but is 
for a Permanent Magnet motor. I think you would have better luck with a brush 
communated permanent magnet motor which are cheap, plentiful and available.
