There are some lead alloys that are much safer than straight lead, and you 
can always make a stainless steel tube to pour the molten lead into (bonus: 
it might make your drop weight last longer), or even just paint it with a 
really thick coat of epoxy paint or a powdercoat so that as little lead is 
exposed to water as possible.
