Some of the most fun I had as a child was playing submarine in a cardboard 
box (they also work pretty well as a camera obscura, too)!

WHOI is a definite must-see.  Alvin wasn't there when I visited about two 
years ago (its current location is shown at 
http://www.sssg.whoi.edu/atlantislog.jpg), but their visitor's center has a 
mock-up and a number of interesting displays.  I don't remember if they 
offer guided tours, but you might check out their web site at www.whoi.edu, 
if you haven't already.
