RE: [PSUBS-MAILIST] looking for trolling/thruster motors

Brent,

I'm using Minnkota RT74s which I bought off www.trollingmotorparts.com. I
think the guy there was called Jack, he was very helpfull. Don't buy the
whole motors, they run about $650 each. Instead give them a call, and they
can sell you the parts you need for about half that. I got the lower ends
and the speed controller electronics. One of them was defective, and they
replaced it with no hassle.

They sell both Minnkotas and Motorguides, but they recommended the former as
being more reliable. Thats their opinion, I really did not have any
experience with trolling motors before this.

The stock speed controls should be fine, they're pulse width modulation
(hence efficient). If you buy another model do check that the controler is
PWM, as the resistor controllers on cheaper motors waste an awful lot of
energy. Another nice thing about these is they have reverse. The
"salt-water" designation seems to be less important... nothing some paint
wouldn't cure.

rgds,

- Alec

Subject: [PSUBS-MAILIST] looking for trolling/thruster motors

Hi alec,

I'm interested in the model of minnkota 74lb you are using and the
controller.

I've been looking for thrusters suitable for what I'm building (fresh/sea
water). Minnkota and motorguide have some many models available. I don't
know which model to go for ????

Have you or anyone in the group got a contact for the technical/supply of
lower units.

The last time a send anything to this group the reply I did was "weird,
living in New Zealand shopping in USA."

With the power of internet, telephone, fax, credit card and shipping
everything is really on your our doorstep.

Thanks for your help
