Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] New comer w/ROV Question
Hi, Stan:
Re: mag couplings/polarity - to find north/south, you just let the
magnets do it for you. Put a couple of your disc magnets within
face-suckin' distance and they will hook up . . .the ends/sides adjacent to
the join are opposite poles. For your purposes ( or for any purposes that
I can think of!) there is no north/south - that's just a convention - there
are only opposites and these are always easy to locate. If you want to
actually make a mag - coupling, you don't use what you may think of as the
magnets 'attraction' for one another - rather, you use their repulsion to
keep the coupling from slipping. That is, on one side of the plate or
cylinder wall you have two, say, neodymium cubes 1/2" X 1/2" ( a common
size) you space them half an inch apart , on the other side you have an
identical cube lined up oppposite the gap and with the same polarity as the
pair that are in-line.Repeat to form a circle. When you rotate the
inner'circle' it doesn't want to slide past the outer circle 'cause it
would have to enter the like field to do so. So the outer one rotates along
with the inner one so as to maintain its position.
