Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] New comer w/ROV Question
Hi, Stan:
Re: Magnetic seals for sub thrusters - check out 'Giannini' in
Italy . . .they've been building mag seals for years. Primarily for
Oceanographic use. Not so hot for thrusters - since you need a very large
contact thru hull area to handle the torque of even a modest thruster and
it needs to be quite thin to magnetically couple efficiently - large
area/thin means 'no bueno' for pressure. If you're interested, most such
coupling are a cylinder within a cylinder, rather than a face to face
coupling, also the thought of using an electro-magnet and simply putting
more pwer to the coupling doesn't do it - the field reaches a maximum
saturation quite quickly and more power doesn't equal more seal! I spent an
inordinate amount of time on magnetics for submersible use - but in a
different application.
