The idea was not intended for short duration dives :) such as those with smaller subs. But it was aimed at boats like the CSSX that might spend 2-5 days submerged, and would need a way to removing co2 from the atmosphere.
As for energy consumption, I was definitely looking at having an air motor help feed some energy back into the compressor. I mean, you're gonna need to exaust some of that compressed and scrubbed air at some point, so why not use it to help push the compressor :)
I don't see the device being that big, of course dependant on the occupant count, and their activity. the real concern, is as you voiced before, the whole nasty power consumption issue. Again, if you attach it to the mian driveshaft on the boat, I bet it's activity wouldn't be noticed that much.
course, the larger the sub, the more batterys you'll have :) and the more power you can afford to "waste" in this endevour.
