[PSUBS-MAILIST] liquid breathing

Herve,
Sorry to dispute your last--the US Navy has been experimenting with it since
the mid-60s--with limited success. The problem is not with breathing, which
these guinea pigs did not do--they were filled with a highly oxygenated
liquid that was pumped (I think). The problem was in the exchange capability
of the alveoli. The tissue COULD absorb enough oxygen but COULD NOT get the
carbon dioxide out quickly enough. Pretty neat, though, if they can ever
figure it out. I don't think this research is still going on, but who knows
with the military?
