I sat here and thought about it.  It was in a 1950 magazine; not 
really that long ago (I keep telling myself).  I wonder if any of
the guys involved are still around?  

I checked.  The designer and builder was Halley Hamlin.  The
SSDI says that he died in 1990, in California.  The "mechanic" was
Orville Sodders, who helped died in the last month: I found his name 
in the parish newsletter for an Indiana Roman Catholic church in
Newburgh, Indiana.

Does anyone want me to contact Sodders' daughter?  Or to follow
up on Hamlin's family?  They might have left the plans ...
