The guy I was talking to who sells DPV plans was telling me that the stuff
people he knows use is transmission fluid - thought he had no explanation
of why this should be better or worse than anything else.

BTW, I am beginning to wonder if people on this list may not be overly
enamoured of complexity. I find it amusing that one can get many responses
on oil filling trolling motors, or pressure balancing one using its own
tiny reg and tank, yet not a single bite for a discussion of plain old
seals.
