I agree guns is a dead horse issue.
About viewports though, my favorite protection design is the design used on
the Nekton and in particular the Delta.  This sub has a superb safety record
with over 5000 or so dives.  The shape also lends itself well to being
towed. Simple, robust, and straight forward.
