[PSUBS-MAILIST] John Holland's first boat

Holland demanded a slight positive buouyancy, so his first boat was
trimmed
to diving trim by flooding tanks. To submerge, planes forced the boat
under.

The gasoline engine was a failure. It simply didn't work. For those
of
you who like this sort of trivia, it was mounted in the compartment
with the solo pilot, between the legs of the pilot. The only man to
operate the boat was John Holland.

He once sat on the bottom for an hour. He did this by opening sea cocks
which permitted the central compartment -- the one he was in -- to fill
to a depth of a few inches, thereby killing positive buouyancy.

Interesting notes on the first attempts . . . .
