There's a lot to be said about alternative materials, both pro and con.

Steel is easy for the backyard craftsman to work with, and well suited
strength-and-weightwise for use in building submarines,  I'm forced to
prefer it because it's the medium I can afford to work in.  (We're all
limited by economic constraints.)

If I had the facilities to build something like DEEP FLIGHT, the SEA LINK,
or the ALUMINAUT, I've got some dreams that would be nicely rendered in
those materials, too.  I just don't happen to have a pressurized autoclave
and such; so I work with steel.
