I would defiantly place the two rings in and I would put them exactly where they go and tack them. There is a good chance that the opening will create a weak spot so to speak and the shell will bend up at the center of the hole. Brian is right if it is a sphere, no worries. The cylinder can go egg shape.

That's 1/2" if
it's A516 70 grade it should be no problem,
My Sphere thickness is 3/8" and
I could not detect any distortion.

Hi all,
When you cut out the hole for the
conningtower, is distortion of the shell an
issue?
My shell is
12mm in thickness. Wondering if I should place a
reinforcement ring on either side of the hole to be cut -Not
welding them so I can remove them after I have tacked the
tower in place.
