The compensating diaphragms might want rigid, free-flooding tubes to sit in for stability in a seaway, and to protect them from snags and dumb feet.

That is readily available, just look online for "molded fiberglass grating". There is some similar stuff that's easier on the feet, which you can find searching "pultruded grating", but I went for this one with wider openings because the midships thrusters blow right through it.
