I did not have the umbilical on a spool, it was 1.5 in dia hot tub hose and it just floated on the surface.

 My log salvage ROV used a coax for video signal to the
 surface and the picture was amazing and the audio was just
 as good.  I used simple cheapest coax and we went to
 350 feet with no issues ever.
