If you're going fast enough (say 10 knots), and not going deep (say < 100
feet) the exhaust gases will come out on their own, especially if you
design the back end of the sub to create a vortex that helps suck the
exhaust out.

Don't forget, the exhaust *is* getting compressed on the way out by the
travel of the piston.
