The CO2 will give you a headache before you pass out but the low o2 will

Sure they do. Capt. Kittredge spent years pushing the "no O2" on board rule, 
figuring it was more dangerous than all the equipment needed to control and 
distribute it. Some of us talked him around, I guess, and even his personal 
submarine has an 02 system.

Lack of oxygen never comes up, in fact, as the C02 buildup becomes critical 
much sooner than oxygen loss.
