CNN Perspectives
Ice Run: Submarine to the Arctic
Airs on CNN: Sunday, September 12 9pm EST
Please note- our Premiere date has been changed
To all members and associates of the Silent Service,
CNN Perspectives is proud to present the National debut of:
Ice Run; Submarine to the Arctic. One of the first in-house
productions in the flagship CNN Perspectives documentary series,
Ice Run follows the journey of the U.S.S Hawkbill (SSN-666) on
it's final mission. A rare look into the life of submariners,
Ice Run represents the next generation of sailors and the underlines
the importance of submarines in a downsizing Navy.
This program is an exciting look into a world you hold dear.
After working on this project, I too believe the submariner life
is special; one of devotion, patriotism, and honor. This special
message serves as an announcement not only to the submarine
community, for we believe you already have an interest, but to
those around you wanting to learn more about the lives of submariners.
Being in a position to disseminate information, we ask you to please
forward and/or post this information to your fellow sailors, associates,
and any other interested parties. Thank you.

Ice Run: Submarine to the Arctic
Airs on CNN: Sunday, September 12 9pm EST
The producers of this program wish to state that without
the gracious and professional help of LT. CMDR Dave Werner PAO,
Rear Admiral Al Konetzni COMSUBPAC, CMDR Robert Perry and the
crew of the USS Hawkbill, this enlightening and educational program
would not be possible.
Please read a brief description of the show;
Step on board for a submarine adventure with CNN Perspectives
for ICE RUN: Submarine to the Arctic
CNN producer Vickie Usher is the first female journalist
to go under the Arctic ice pack when she spends one week aboard
the USS Hawkbill. Join her and the Hawkbill crew for unprecedented
access to one of the most sophisticated and secretive vessels on earth.
One of the finest fast attack submarines in the US Navy, this nuclear
powered Sturgeon class gem holds 125 men in 292 feet of hardened steel.
Putting their faith in technology, 19 year old crewmen drive the
submarine hundreds of feet below the surface of the Arctic Ocean, and
thousands of miles away from any known civilization.
The CNN team heads into uncharted territory in this gripping
one-hour documentary filmed on board a U.S. Navy submarine; the
U.S.S. Hawkbill. Deployed to chart the Arctic seafloor and gather
scientific data, this otherwise 'soft-mission' proves to be extremely
dangerous due to under-ice geographical hazards. Giving viewers a rare
insight into the lives of submariners, Ice Run is the story of the long
tradition of the Silent Service, carried on by America's youth, facing
a downsizing military.
"It is a window on a world you never knew existed," says Usher,
while under the ice. "Quite an incredible experience."
Ice Run also represents Hawkbill's final mission. After 28
years of exemplary service, she is scheduled for decommission upon
return from the 29,533 nautical mile around the world mission.
Selected because of her skilled crew and special ice-capable design,
the Hawkbill will embark select scientists from the National Science
Foundation, in a joint effort between the Foundation and the Navy to
chart this least traveled area of the globe.
Leaving an island paradise behind, Hawkbill sails north from
Sub Base in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii to navigate the treacherous Bering
Strait. The constantly changing terrain include 'ice keels';
icicle-like formations that run straight down from the surface of the
ice overhead, and uncharted mountains that rise up from the seafloor.
Hawkbill crewmembers had this to say about the traverse,
"Here, walls of ice blocked our path and we had to drive miles
out of our way to get around or through them. This was a real
white-knuckle experience. Sometimes going down to only 20 feet off
the bottom, we had ice pass as close as 17 feet overhead. This was the
greatest shiphandling challenge any of us had experienced and one that
required everyone to perform flawlessly for days on end to complete
safely."
Producer Vickie Usher admitted that during the day she became
used to the way of submarine life. But, just as she fell asleep each
night, she would notice the perpetual loud hum and for one moment before
falling asleep she would realize that she was enshrined in a huge metal
object that was crawling along the ocean bottom, hundreds of miles from
land, with nothing but freezing cold water and thick ice above.
ICE RUN: A Submarine Adventure is a once-in-a-lifetime chance
to submerge yourself in an unknown world.
Take a new perspective with CNN, get underway with ICE RUN!
Airs on CNN: Sunday, September 12th, 9pm EST
