Re: Updated scoop on Halon
Hi guys,
Another "factoid" about Halon 1301.... It is heavier than air and will
settle to the lowest point. I used to sell this product and one of the
demonstrations was to fill a jar with the (invisible) gas and then pour it
like water into another jar with a candle in it. It would displace the air
in the jar from the bottom up and finally extinguish the candle. Point
being, you could use it on a fire low in the sub and it doesn't mix much with
the air. You could still breath the air in the upper portion of the sub
(unless it's filled with toxic smoke). We used to set up large systems in
computer rooms of banks, etc., where it was certified safe for human
occupancy in these locked rooms while the system was set off, at least for a
while. In a sub, though, the probability of smoke in a fire requires a handy
scuba regulator with a full face mask available as someone else has
mentioned. My two cents worth.....
