I contacted an anode supplier here and told him I wanted a bunch of magnesium for protecting the aluminium and was told that magnesium is too reactive and wont last 5 minutes in Saltwater but they use magnesium in fresh water and zinc in salt water. So to save me looking up my ECS I am taking this guys word for it and bought some zinc rod and will machine it into buttons to bolt onto various fittings. Mercury have anodes bolted on to protect their aluminium sternlegs etc and it looks like zinc to me. Hugh From: owner-personal_submersibles@psubs.org [mailto:owner-personal_submersibles@psubs.org] On Behalf Of vbra676539@aol.com Anodized aluminum works nicely if well done. There are pinhole issues with it that cause some problems, and threading is always an issue. Any thread in aluminum must be carefully cleaned and filled so that salt water is excluded, as the salts will cause a buildup and jam SS bolts tight. Shorts in the electrical system are measured one piece at a time. Each component must test clean. A good maritime electrician is the person you want for this. They know how to look for the minor short circuits and chase them down. I agree that magnesium corrodes quickly, but stipulate that it corrodes quickly when there is electrical potential, not otherwise. If your electrical system is clean, then magnesium will not control quickly. If you see it begin to corrode during a dive operation, then set to work, as you have a short circuit somewhere (probably in the lighting or thruster wiring, in my experience). Vance -----Original Message----- Magnesium corrodes quickly but Zink on a sub with Alu parts seems not useful to me..
Electric leakage; should be avoided. Does anybody know the right way to measure it??
I prefer to anodise the Alu parts. Looks good, is corrosion resistant and the ALu is not conductive anymore.
Delrin/nylon washers are also a good idea!

Every week? Sounds like a high resistance short to ground. Our zincs lasted 2-3 YEARS in and around Norway. For anodes, we used zincs on steel and magnesium on aluminum. They all lasted a good while unless there was an electrical problem, which we corrected ASAP. Vance
