Looks like he just broke the surface!
Yup, been some advances in 52 years. Trieste planned to
spend somewhat more time on the bottom than it did.
When it landed it stirred up a bunch of sediment, and with no current
it wasn't dispersing, so after a while Walsh and Piccard decided they might as
well depart. Don Walsh said it was like being inside a milk bottle trying
to look out. Fortunately they were able to see some unexpected things
right before touchdown.

That's a lot faster than Trieste which took almost 5 hours
to descend and 3:15 to ascend in 1960. Of course is was much
larger. What a ride!
