Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Single Phase to Three Phase Converters (Welding)
Steve,
I have used the homebuilt rotary converters in my machine shop for
several years. I used a 3hp motor for my 12" Clausing lathe and 15"
LeBlond with 1.5hp motors. The 3hp is wired with a run capacitor, 10
mfd/hp, and a start cap., 100mfd/hp, in parallel on the third leg. The
start cap must have a momentary push button switch in series. Its
function is to "kick" start the 3hp motor (rotary converter). It
cannot stay connected in the circuit or it will fail, usually blow up.
The run cap. stays in the circuit. For starting, I hold down the start
cap. push button, hit the input switch ( a 3 hp motor controller/
circuit breaker), then release the push button, all less than two
seconds. There are relay/timer circuits that do this automatically, I
prefer the simple push button. The rotary converter spins up in less
than 3 seconds and then the lathes are ready to run.
For my Shizuoka mill (4hp) and Standard Modern 26" lathe (3hp with
brake, 300# 4-jaw chuck) I have a 7hp rotary converter.
I have read that the rotary converter is best for electronic loads
like welders.
There are several posts in the Practical Machinist forum:
