I have to go to China to do some submersible talks
with the Gov't - Don Walshand I will be their guests for a full week -( I'm sure
we'll be expected to 'sing for our supper') and am up to my earbones getting
power points up to date, last details on the first production run of the new
'Exosuit', and so on.
Will have a look for the Arms promo (it is call
"Armed for Deep Water") when I get back in December.
I haven't seen Pado's arm info - so don't if it's
similar to the G.E. arm - not likely though - the G.E. is quite complex and
contains some proprietary circuitry. If you have a link on the Pado arm, I'd
like to see it.
Speaking of arms - I was diving in the 'Curasub' in
Curcao a couple of weeks ago and had a chance to compare our arm ('Newtarm')
with the standard 'Hydro-lek' arm - ours was much faster and smoother
(obviously, or I wouldn't have mentioned it!) We had the Hydro-lek mounted on
the port side and ours on the starboard - and were collecting rare fishies
(Candy basselets and the likes - some of these little inch and a half or
two inch critters go for thousands of $. The Newtarm handled the water jetting
hose and the quinalene (fish 'mickey fin') dispensing wand. The HydroLek had the
suction hose attached to the acrylic fish hotel. The fish tank is droppable and
is moved up the slope on several subsequent dives until it is within SCUBA
range. There it goes to a wet lab until being shipped to Japan where it is
either a fish collecors showpiece or the worlds most expensive
sushi!

Phil, It think that it would be really educational for all the P-Subbers
to see that promo. Once the Subs are made then the attention will be
focused on trying to grab something. Tom Prado has some great footage on
the arm that he built. Is that similar to the ARMS? Chs,

I did a 16mm promo
film of the 'Arms' system on board the rig Ben Ocean Lancer - I'll should have
a look for it in the film archives and maybe do a DVD transfer - some of the
bottom footage was shot from inside the bell in a couple of thousand feet of
water - I think Tom Pado was in that footage - looking a lot different than he
does now, on Youtube - but, then, don't we all!

My first experience
with office politics and offshore back stabbing came around Arms I on board
the Glomar Atlantic. Great system. I only wish that I had been able to use
it longer. The GE Arm was fabulous. There is simply no comparison to
anything else I have ever used.

Yup,
I know Tom Pado - he used to work for us at Oceaneering International Inc.
He and John Fike were the lead pilots on a series of 3,000 foot rated
thruster/manipulator bells designed for offshore oil related work - the
series was called 'Ocean Arms' and Perry built Arms1 through 3, We built
'Arms 4' here in B.C. and it's still here - out in the boneyard. The
thruster bells were really only a piloted delivery system for the G.E.
force-feedback, spatially compliant manipulator arm. (O.I.I. owned all
rights to the G.E. arm - the rights were purchased from General
Electric - it was used in their 'Man-mate' program.) The G.E. arm was, in my
opinion, the best manipulator arm ever made - right up to current time.
Biggest problem was cost - about $250,000 per arm and controllers. I used
this system many times and it was superb!
Pado
went to work in Australia and I later heard he had built some underwater
gear for use on Ozzie rigs - haven't talked to him for a lot of years.
Good to see he's still vertical.

is a gentleman in my area who is involved with submersibles. I was
curious if anyone in psubs is aware of this individual. Not often I
get someone local with a sub connection since I am “landlocked” in the
Midwest.
