Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] steel to aluminum
The article refers to the resulting interface as a "metallurgical bond",
but I'm almost certain that this is not the case. The crystal
structures of steel and aluminum under identical conditions are not
compatible (body centered vs. face centered cubic, e.g.), and I don't
think you can have iron and aluminum nuclei metallically bonded in the
same crystal. More likely is that the explosive process creates what is
actually a physical bond due to interlocking of the individual grains in
each material, but under the high pressure created by explosive, these
grains are severely deformed and thus the interlock is tight with
negligible void spaces. The resultant bond would conduct electricity
and heat as per a metallic bond, and would certainly be strong, but
would be subject to all of the disadvantages of bi-metallic materials
with regard to corrosion, differential thermal expansion and so forth.
