If this transducer were made by a local one-man shop, then it would not
surprise me if it was a simple magnetostriction type transducer.

Such transducers where often built by placing a signal coil along the
circumference of a thin nickel tube (much the same way you would wrap in a
doughnut without covering the hole in the center, i.e. like a toroid), ref

Therefore, I believe the said circuit schematics could give us indications
to what type of transducer the underwater communication system was
designed for (magnetostrictive transducers are low impedance).

Another thing is that such a type of transducer (in contrast to a homemade
piezoelectric bender type) performs quite good as a transmitting
projector, also.
