Emile,

There are many do-it-yourself scrubber designs available on the Internet.  Search for "rebreather" or "home-built scrubber" and you should get a large number of results.  You should also take a look at ExtendAir cartridges ( www.extendair.com ) which are more expensive than sodalime but very compact and easy to handle.  I have a simple canister modification for submarine use which I will post on the web site.
