[PSUBS-MAILIST] simple explaination of binaural listening

If you entered a room with the lights out or your eyes closed, you can still find radios or fans by simply turning your head and following the sound. (try this) The ear closest the sound source hears it louder as your head absorbs sound destined for the ear that's farther away. In that this sound is being produced from a single source, the sound reaching each ear will be out of phase with each other unless you are facing the noise producing object straight on. If facing it straight on, the signals of the sound will be in phase and this is detected and determined by your brain.
To do this underwater due to the difference in the speed of sound in water as apposed to the speed of sound in air, your ears (hydrophones in our case) need to be at least 900 mm apart. If these are at this minimal spacing, the same hearing search can be performed.
