Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Sub aground

What fascinated me was that the sub was engaged in "putting people ashore!" Was this a simulated Commando raid? When does a deep-draft vessel like a sub ever put people ashore other than at dockside?

Best,
Marc

PORTREE, Scotland, Oct. 22 (UPI) -- A nearly $2-billion British nuclear
submarine has run aground on rocks off the Scottish coast, but there is no
danger of radiation leaks, officials said.

HMS Astute was believed to be undergoing sea trials, and isn't expected to
enter service until next year, The Daily Telegraph reported Friday.

Astute has been called the most advanced nuclear submarine in the world,
and
details of its propulsion system could be revealed as it sits waiting to
be
pulled from rocks off the Isle of Skye, the report said.

"Astute ran aground by her very stern earlier this morning as she was
transferring people ashore," a Navy spokesman said. "There's no nuclear
issue or no environmental issue that we are aware of and no one has been
hurt."

The Navy took possession of the submarine in August; it isn't known
whether
the boat, which can carry up to 38 Tomahawk cruise missiles and Spearfish
torpedoes, was carrying any weapons.

"This is not a nuclear incident," said a Ministry of Defense spokeswoman.
"We are responding to the incident and can confirm that there are no
injuries to personnel and the submarine remains watertight."
