Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] acrylic dome

Hi Jens,
There are a lot of island groups within 25km of the
coast of NZ that have good visibility, one (the Aldermans)
consistantly gets 200ft. It was diving in such locations
that inspired me to make a sub. I wouldn't want to dive in under
15ft of visibility. Graemme Hawke describes the view from his dome
as being so good that he had to reach out to feel where the dome was.
Regards Alan

** Domes provide such good visibility,
** but cost a fortune.

I would think the amount of truth in the above quoted statement
(especially the part about 'such good visibility') is depending on the
underwater visibility of the waters one plan to operate one's sub.

If a sub is normally operated in waters with no more than 2 feet of
visibility, would such a condition justify the high investment of a large
acrylic dome?

Maybe it would be better to install a smaller, flat peep-hole in acrylic
and spend the rest of the acrylic dome budget on a short range, high
frequency forward looking sonar.

Just a thought...

Best regards,
Jens Laland
