Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] underwater thruster

Good stuff. Very interesting. I remember a patent application listed in Terry's Manned Submersible book with counter-rotating units outside the hull diameter (to offset the torque, no doubt). I can't help but notice that this was never built. Too expensive? I don't know. That said, I wrote Don Liberatore at HBOI (who is on vacation this week) about their ring thruster. I think there were all sorts of bearing problems and maybe the thrusters just weren't durable enough. I'll find out about that and get back to you.

Read the document and think of a large diameter DC motor with stationary
coils built along the inside of a submarine pressure hull itself, that is,
positioned immediately ahead of the aft hemisphere. Also, imagine the
flywheel effect and high torque as you slowly rotate a whole army of
moderate sized permanent magnets.

A large diameter propeller is then attached through a "gimbal/constant
velocity joint" arrangement on the outside shaft which enables you to
physically steer the rotating shaft with a Kort Nozzle both up/down and
port/starboard (as well as anything in between).

Something like the Swedish Navy Midget Sub I told you about awhile ago.
And please note that I am still working on getting some feedback from the
Swedish Navy on this.

The following has quite some family resemblance with my attempted
description above (although this one rotates the coils). It shows an image
of a large diameter, 30-poled DC generator running at 100 RPM, ref

Finally, here is something for your Sunday brunch, ref
