The method of attachment shown in the above link is pretty nice. One
possible problem may be that if the sub was on a wreck and there were additional
entanglement hazards, the "two rope" system might increase the risk in
getting the sub attached to a heavy lift line. The "pin and socket" used at JSL
seems like a foolproof method. Here's a quick sketch for the folks who didn't
get to see it at Harbor Branch.
Although just about ANY mechanism is subject to failure for one reason or
another, this one seems good.
The pin follows the buoy line down and the socket is just a tube with a
"collar" so the expanding "ears" catch on the inside. The pin was very heavy and
it appeared to be able to enter the socket at an angle if the sub was not
sitting level. Not sure how much angle would be accepted. The missile shaped pin
should be able to maneuver through most obstructions, and "center-up" on the
socket at a pretty good angle.
