Hello Ian,My only objection is price, since the price and location are out of reach for me. Considering airfare, hotel, car, and meals, those in corners of the continent are probably looking at a total cost in the neighborhood of $2000 to $2500 for essentially an informational course covering material that is already publicly available. While I'm sure there will be interesting questions and discussion, I have found "Rules for Underwater Vehicles and Systems" pretty straight forward except in a couple of circumstances. I wouldn't want to pay $1000 if the course is essentially nothing more than a review of the standard and from reading the course objective that sounds like what it will be. Also, the survey sections probably are non-applicable since the vast majority of psubbers would not entertain certification due to costs, although admittedly that information could be useful in forming guidelines for design and construction.
I think your investigation into the course is great and wish we could get more people interested in it. If the course fee were $100 or $250, then I'd take it just out of curiosity. Even at $1000/person you might get a better response if it were held in association with a PSUBS convention at which people are planning to attend anyway. I wonder if there aren't some alternatives that we could look into such as:
1) Teach a similar course ourselves. 2) Ask ABS to lower their fee and schedule a course at a PSUBS convention. Jon On 8/25/2010 1:00 PM, irox wrote:
Hi, since I didn't get any takers on this, I'll rephrase the question. Why aren't you taking this course? Cheers! Hi, The American Bureau of Shipping runs a course called: "Classification of Submersibles". I've include the course description/highlights below. The course is a two day course, it will cost $1000 per person and be taught in Huston, Texas. If you are (seriously) interested in taking the course, please contact me off list, please include a list of time frames you can take the course. We need a minimum of four people (so I am looking for three others - although we can accommodate more). Once we have enough people signed up I will schedule the course with ABS. If I don't find enough people I still plan on taking the course some how. ABS offered to try and get me into the course being taught to the Navy, but it clashes with this years psub convention. I might be able to get in on another Navy course (yet to be scheduled) later this fall. Thanks, Ian. -- Course: Classification of Submersibles (REG015) Course Objectives and Benefits ------------------------------ This course is intended to enhance participants’ familiarity with submersible design concepts, the requirements of the ABS Rules for classification of submersibles and relevant industry standards. This includes review of the factors that must be considered in designing a system and specifying the components for compliance with the ABS requirements. Course Highlights ----------------- * Introduction * Engineering aspects of o Pressure Hull and Exostructure o Windows and Viewports o Piping and Life Support Systems o Electrical Systems o Buoyancy - Emergency Ascent and Stability o Fire Fighting o Navigation and Communication Equipment o Propulsion Systems and Steering Equipment * Surveys during construction * Surveys after construction for maintenance of classification throughout service life o Periodical surveys o Unscheduled surveys
